Please join me for our return to Monterey Bay: to the sound of arriving waves, night and day, on the curving shoreline, to the aroma of the pines in the morning air; and to all the new possibilities we are both feeling and struggling to feel, as we try to emerge again into this troubled but astonishing world.
I am full of anticipation for the weekend; reading and reciting from my new book of poetry ‘Still Possible’: looking at what could be possible now, not only societally but at all the crucial thresholds we find ourselves on in our individual lives.
In the depths of the pandemic lockdown, confined to our immediate surroundings, all of us experienced in a very personal way the dramatic crossroads of creativity and self-sabotage that has been the birthright of human experience since the beginning of conscious time. All of us wondered what was now possible; and even now, as we try to emerge into the world again, we are still wondering what could possibly be possible even as we put our heads above the parapet and try to imagine ourselves in a once more, fully inhabited and travelled world. But no matter the drama of our times, all human beings ask the question around what is still possible at every crucial threshold of maturation in their lives.
”Still Possible” was written out of the quiet inner sanctum of my study, looking out at the spring and then the summer, rolling like an unstoppable tide into the world, as it always has, no matter the difficulties of our human world, proclaiming that other more secret, more precious birthright of possibility, hidden beneath every doubt and every tiny, almost imperceptible act of self harm.
