Alice B. Fogel

Alice B. Fogel was New Hampshire's State Poet Laureate (2014-2019). Originally from the Hudson Valley, she is a former theatrical costumer who earned her BA in art and literature from Antioch College, and her MA in poetry from the University of New Hampshire. She works one-on-one with learning disabled students at Landmark College in Putney, Vermont also.

I am going to keep trying

for the balance,

remembering the risks and the value

of extremes, and that experience

teaches the length of allowable lean;

that it is easier — and wiser —

to balance a stone as if on one toe

though it weigh a hundred pounds

than to push it back against the curve

of its own world.
